Crystal Clear pH Buffer will help to prevent wide pH swings which are very common in ornamental ponds from dawn to dusk due to respiration and photosynthesis. All ponds are affected by pH. alkalinity or acidity will determine whether the pH is high or low, respectively. In order to maintain pH at a constant, buffering of the system is required. This means controlling the alkalinity of the water. Alkalinity is the capacity of a natural water system to resist change in pH and is measured in terms of bicarbonate and carbonate ions available in the system. Alkalinity is also very important in the ntirification process to convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. Alkalinity and oxygen are the two rate limiting factors in the nitrification process. A properly buffered system resists change in pH due to acid rain and other external factors. It is essential for ornamental ponds to maintain a buffering capacity of 80-240 PPM for pH stabilization. CrystalClear® Buffer will increase pH stability and increase buffering capacities.

CrystalClear® pH Salts Down (pHUSION) will safely and efficiently lower the pH of an ornamental pond within safe ranges (6.5-9.0). If your water is hard or alkaline, a higher dose of CrystalClear® pH Salts Down may be required. Before using CrystalClear® pH Salts Down, make sure the alkalinity (carbonate concentration or buffering capacity) of your water is about 80 ppm. We suggest buffering the alkalinity with CrystalClear® Buffer. It is also a good idea to test the water's pH first with CrystalClear® Test Strips. If the pH is about 8.5-9.0 apply CrystalClear® pH Salts Down. Most ornamental fish can adjust to a pH within 1 or 2 points from neutral (7.0), but it is very important to make pH changes gradually if fish are present. If possible, adjust pH before adding fish.

In closing the pond, cleanliness is paramount.  Your first job is to make sure the fish won’t be sleeping in muck, leaves, or sludge.  That’s where the parasites and bad-guy bacteria are and we don’t want our fish in there with them.  Parasites will be active at lower temperatures than the fish, so your prized pets will be at their mercy unless you do something about it.  If you kept a pretty clean pond all summer, that’s great.  But fall brings autumn leaves and autumn leaves find their way into our ponds.  Leaves don’t break down at the same rate as other organic waste produced by the fish, so they will need a little “helping hand”.  That’s where the water soluble cellulase-enzyme packets come in… just throw them into the water, after the leaves have begun to fall in your area, and the enzyme will accelerate breakdown of the leaves by the cold weather bacteria.  Did I say cold weather bacteria?  Oh, yes, the bottle in the Microbe-Lift/Autumn Winter Prep (AWP) is cold weather bacteria.  It isn’t dependent upon temperatures above 55F, like most other bacteria are.  It also doesn’t care if it is under a layer of ice and snow.  It works through the winter months in the north and it works just as well in the south.  For a cleaner pond next spring, use AWP this fall and winter. Few pond hobbyists worry enough about low pH, but as the pond ages, pH naturally falls to dangerous levels. This is caused by acid produced by the breakdown of organic material.
